Best Things to Do in Edinburgh: A Local's Guide

Our drivers have taken thousands of visitors around this incredible city. Here's what they always recommend.

Edinburgh Old Town skyline

Edinburgh is one of Europe's most beautiful and culturally rich cities — compact enough to explore on foot, but with enough depth to keep you busy for weeks. After thousands of journeys with visitors from all over the world, our drivers know exactly what makes people's eyes light up. This is their guide.

The Unmissable: Edinburgh's Icons

🏰 Edinburgh Castle

You can't visit Edinburgh without going to the Castle. Perched on volcanic rock 130 metres above the city, it dominates the skyline and houses the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and the National War Museum. Book tickets in advance — queues can be long in summer.

👑 The Royal Mile & Old Town

The Royal Mile stretches from Edinburgh Castle at the top to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom. Walk it all — the closes (narrow alleyways) either side hide some of the most atmospheric corners in Scotland. Don't miss Grassmarket, Victoria Street (one of the world's most photographed streets), and the Greyfriars Kirkyard.

🏛️ Palace of Holyroodhouse

The official Scottish residence of the King, at the foot of the Royal Mile. The adjacent ruins of Holyrood Abbey date back to 1128. Behind it is Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat — an extinct volcano you can climb for extraordinary views across the city.

🎨 Scottish National Gallery

Free entry, world-class collection. The National Gallery on the Mound houses works by Rembrandt, Velázquez, Titian and Monet alongside Scotland's finest art. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery on Queen Street is equally impressive and equally free.

The Hidden Gems (driver's picks)

🍺 The Oxford Bar

A proper Edinburgh pub, untouched by tourism or refurbishment. Made famous by Ian Rankin's Rebus novels. No food, no frills, just excellent real ale and locals who actually live here.

🌿 Cramond Village & Beach

About 5 miles from the city centre, Cramond is a beautiful Georgian village on the Firth of Forth with a walk-in tidal island you can access at low tide. Completely different world from the tourist centre.

🍷 Leith

Edinburgh's port district has transformed into one of the UK's finest food and drink destinations. The Shore is lined with excellent seafood restaurants. The Royal Yacht Britannia is also here — genuinely fascinating even if you're not a royalist.

🦁 Edinburgh Zoo

Home to the UK's only giant pandas (on loan from China), Edinburgh Zoo is on Corstorphine Hill and offers a full day out for families. Our drivers take families there regularly and it's always a hit.

When to Visit Edinburgh

August is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the world's largest arts festival. The city is electric but extremely busy. Book accommodation and transfers months in advance.

December–January brings Hogmanay — Edinburgh's legendary New Year celebration, arguably the world's best. Again, book everything well ahead.

April–June is our favourite time — the days are long, crowds are manageable, and Scotland is incredibly green after winter. Highly recommended.
