Flight, train or car — we compare every option so you can choose what suits you best.

Edinburgh to London travel

The Edinburgh–London corridor is one of the UK's busiest travel routes. Around 5 million people make the journey each year, and the debate about the best way to do it is never settled. The answer genuinely depends on your priorities — here's a complete comparison.

OptionTimeCostBest For
✈️ Flight 1h 15min (+2h airport) £30–£150 Speed, budget
🚂 Train 4h 20min–4h 30min £30–£200 Comfort, scenery
🚌 Coach 8–9 hours £15–£40 Budget travellers
🚗 Drive 7–8 hours £60–£90 fuel Flexibility, luggage

✈️ Flying: Edinburgh to London

The flight itself takes only about 1 hour 15 minutes, but factor in getting to Edinburgh Airport (25–35 minutes from the city centre), check-in and security (1–1.5 hours), and then transfer from a London airport to the city centre (40 minutes to over an hour depending on which airport), and the total journey can easily be 4+ hours.

London airports from Edinburgh: Heathrow (best for central London), Gatwick (south London), Luton (budget carriers, further from centre), Stansted (further east).

Verdict: Best value if you book early (Ryanair and easyJet often have sub-£40 fares). The real cost is in the airport transfers at both ends.

🚂 Train: The Scenic Option

The LNER and Avanti East Coast services between Edinburgh Waverley and London King's Cross are genuinely excellent. The fastest trains take 4 hours 20 minutes, with good Wi-Fi, a buffet car, and views of the Northumberland coast that are hard to beat.

Tips: Book well in advance for the cheapest advance fares (as low as £30 single). Standard open tickets can be £150+. First Class upgrades often aren't much more if you book ahead and are worthwhile for longer journeys.

Verdict: Our favourite option for the Edinburgh–London journey. City centre to city centre, luggage-friendly, comfortable and the journey itself is enjoyable. If you book ahead, often cheaper than flying when you factor in everything.

🚌 Coach: Budget-First

National Express and Megabus run overnight and daytime coaches between Edinburgh and London for as little as £15 if you book far enough ahead. Journey time is 8–9 hours depending on stops.

Verdict: Only worth considering on a very tight budget. The time cost is significant and overnight coaches can be uncomfortable.

🚗 Driving: Maximum Flexibility

The drive from Edinburgh to London is around 400 miles and takes 7–8 hours without traffic (longer through the day). The M1/A1 route is straightforward. Fuel will cost £60–£90 depending on your car, plus any motorway services and possible tolls.

Verdict: Excellent if you have a lot of luggage, are travelling as a family, or want to stop along the way. Not worth it for solo travellers or if time is short.

The Bottom Line: Which Should You Choose?

For most people travelling between Edinburgh and London, the train is the best overall option — especially with advance booking. It's city-centre to city-centre, comfortable, and usually cheaper than flying once you account for all costs.

If you're flying, don't forget to budget and plan for your airport transfer at both ends. A pre-booked private transfer from Edinburgh Airport is the smoothest way to start or end the journey.
